Boston shopping options have a history all their own. Filene's basement, first opened in 1908, is the nation's oldest, most renowned off-price store. Faneuil Hall Marketplace, vibrant core of Boston's historic waterfront, spreads out in three restored 19th century buildings with some 125 shops and nearly two dozen restaurants in a festive atmosphere accented by cobblestone streets.(On first Wednesdays monthly, Faneuil Hall hosts "A Taste of Quincy Market" offering free samples from 5 to 7 p.m.) Also with a spectacular waterfront location, CambridgeSide Galleria houses more than 120 of Boston's favorite stores including H&M, J. Crew, Apple Store and more. Copley Place Shopping Galleries feature Neiman Marcus, Tiffany & Co., A/X Armina Exchange, Christian Dior, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and more.
Boston's many museums are also treasuries for shopping, from the Children's Museum for toys, the Concord Museum featuring reproductions and adaptations of American decorative arts, and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum offering posters, rocking chairs, videos, t-shirts, books and more. The Isabella Steward Gardner Museum stocks hand-crafted jewelry and scarves, books, prints, and postcards. Old North Church features pewter items, historical flags, candles and souvenirs. (Because of a fire, the Boston Tea Party Ship shop is closed indefinitely). The Shops at Prudential Center include the region's only Saks Fifth Avenue and more than 60 boutiques and restaurants, plus opportunity to view the Boston skyline from the Skywalk Observatory.
On the outlet front, the upscale Wrenthem Village Premium Outlets has more than 170 designer and name brand stores, from Off-Saks Fifth Avenue to New England's only Burton, the seller of snowboarding equipment. Kittery Outlets, with the Kittery Trading Post, is less than an hour from Boston, In Maine.
